Studio type: DJ or Live Setup
DJ in an X box, on an X stand, Uli style...
For a long time I was dreaming of a DJ setup that will be flexible enough to really do the performance job, but simple enough (and lite enough!) to put together on site in in less then 30 minutes, and will not need a 1 hour sound check... well now I have one, and it is definitely not what I was originally thinking of - It's better! :-) Not on the gear list: * HP TC 1100 tablet/laptop. * 2 x Noontec 750GB USB HD to hold all my tunes, one in the box, 1 for a backup. Call me Paranoid, take 1 * DI box, to balance BCD3000 non-balanced outputs * Logitech trackball, makes mousing around easy. * USB hub, to plug all USB devices in * M-Audio USB to MIDI adapter, so I can control DSP12424 with software, if I can figure a way to run it on XP :-( * Sennheiser HD 25-1 headphones * An iPod, connected directly to the line mixer bypass, for those "Ooops" moments... I leave it playing trough the set, so all I need to do is to press the button... Call me Paranoid, take 2 * The rack itself, an SKB "X" 6U rack with SKB tray * X stand, QuikLok, hight adjustable Putting it together took some effort; most of the cabling had to be custom made, because of the space limitations. The goose neck tight and it's switch had to be custom fitted. The BCD3000 tray had to be modified. Lots of Velcro everywhere holds cables and gear on top of the box together. The setup consists of placing the rack on top of the X stand and securing it with elastic straps, taking the front and rear rack covers off, sticking the laptop, KaossPad and trackball on top and securing it on the Velcro base, pulling the controller tray out, and plugging the USB cables to the laptop, and PA inputs in the patch bay. Attach the goose neck light, headphones, plug in the power outlet and we are done! Limitations: * Effects return is mono only; have to use normal input for stereo return. * DSP1424p software control does not work on XP * Laptop will need to be upgraded to dual core for Ableton Live use... * ... and so will the controller surface. * the "X" stand is fantastic for that crowd interaction/performance feel, as long as you don't have wasted people dancing too close to you... the only way of really securing the whole thing to the ground is to use two bags full of sand placed on the floor legs * The rack is about 2U too large for any hope of taking it on board the plane, so it has to be checked in. Not something I am found of... I have two inflatable cushions that are placed between the components and inflated, to prevent movements inside the rack, which so far worked fine... until some underpaid luggage handler decide to see what happens when the rack is dropped from the plane to the runway... Future plans: * Try to switch to Ableton Live * Get a large (19") touch screen, replace laptop with 1U mounted PC I would like to thank my Mum, the Academy, and Uli Behringer, who make it all possible... and if I hear anyone again going on how Behringer gear "has no soul", I'll play a full set of only Kraftwerk for him. After all, they are a German classic too! Check out my music workstation: http://www.gearjunkies-userstudios.com/studio.php?stid=351 Your feedback is appreciated! Andrej Falout

My small home studio... This is the place where I spend most of the time (besides my work)... :) Other stuff: vocal/studio mic Shure PG-48, sustain pedal Yamaha, Sennheiser HD280PRO headphones... I don't post VST synths and effects here, because I think that everybody who's making computer-based music has a lot of this stuff... Everything is running on AMD 3500+ machine with 2048MB RAM, 80GB + 200GB SATA HDD... As you can see my gear list you can assume what kind of music am I trying to do...
